In Toronto, Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, provides an update on the status of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the province. He is joined by Dr. Dirk Huyer, coordinator of the provincial outbreak response, and Dr. Jessica Hopkins, chief health protection and emergency preparedness officer at Public Health Ontario. In his remarks, Dr. Williams announces that Ontario will pause the administering of first doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
The announcement comes in response to new data concerning the relative likelihood of incidences of rare blood clots linked to the vaccine. It also comes as alternative vaccines, namely Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, are becoming increasingly available in Canada.
