Alberta doctor discusses the surge of COVID-19 cases in the province
Alberta is now experiencing its third wave of COVID-19, with the highest current per capita rate of infections in Canada and the United States. Dr. Noel Gibney, co-chair of the Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Association’s Strategic COVID-19 Pandemic Committee, joins Peter Van Dusen to discuss the likely causes of Alberta’s third wave and what needs to be done to curb the spread of the virus.
Dr. Gibney says that the third wave was likely triggered by opening the province up too early and by a lack of strict COVID-19 restrictions. And he warns that if tighter restrictions are not put in place, the Alberta health-care system could be overwhelmed, leading to the need for a triage program that determines which patients will receive care based on their likelihood of surviving the virus.
