OTTAWA – Today, the Green Party of Canada remembers the tragic attack that unfolded five years ago in the small village of La Loche, Saskatchewan. On that day four people were killed, seven others were injured, and a community was left reeling from a senseless attack that will forever impact the survivors and their families.

“This was a heartbreaking tragedy,” said Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. “On behalf of the Green Party I extend our deepest sympathies to the families who lost their loved ones that day, and to the survivors and the community who must continue to live with this tragedy etched in their memories.

“That such an unfathomable event could unfold in a school environment, a space normally deemed safe and secure, amplifies the grief endured by the community and all those affected. We remember too, the courage and bravery of the first responders who put their lives at risk to protect others. Greens will continue to advocate for increased funding to support health and wellness for all Canadians and in particular for those in Indigenous and racialized communities.

“As many Canadians continue to endure the effects of isolation, disruption and economic hardship driven by the pandemic, we will seek ways to meet and support the needs of vulnerable youth in all communities. And as we remember the people of La Loche today, we stand with them and remember that harm inflicted on any member of our society damages us all. We share their grief.”
