Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week
Kamloops, BC – Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week takes place January 23–30 in support of Family Literacy Day® on January 27. Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week encourages families to play and learn together and promotes the idea of finding a healthy balance between sedentary screen time and active family time.
Since the program’s inception 10 years ago, more than 6,000 students have participated in the Interior Savings Unplug and Play School Challenge annually. This year, 31 schools and more than 8,000 students will be participating. Students are encouraged to reflect on how they feel spending time with their family and what they would like to spend more time doing.
“We weren’t sure if the event would take place this year because of health restrictions,” said Fiona Clare, chair of the Unplug and Play Committee and Literacy in Kamloops’ Literacy Outreach Coordinator. “In the end, the Unplug and Play Committee felt the message of finding a healthy balance between sedentary screen time and active family time was probably more important than ever.”
“It was a conundrum for us, as Unplug and Play is about disconnecting from our digital devices and reconnecting with each other. In past years, we have hosted big events like ABC Family Literacy Day and many in-person activities, but we knew this wasn’t going to be possible this year. Many of the activities require us to plug in, but our hope is that families will do so together. It is still about enjoying active, family fun!” said Clare.
As the title sponsor, Interior Savings Credit Union is encouraging everyone to check out the full slate of activities planned for the week.
“Although Unplug and Play will look a little different than in past years, it is still very much rooted in the belief that parents are their children’s first and most important teacher”, said Kathy Conway, CEO of Interior Savings. “For those events where you need to be plugged in this year, the focus will be on keeping you active through the event or to inspire you with ways to continue learning, playing, and growing as a family well after the event concludes.”
This year you can pick up themed take-home kits (food, science, music, and craft) and participate in virtual and in-person activities. Unlike previous years, the free City-hosted swim and skate events will not take place due to the extended public health measures.
Each day has a unique theme—Unplug and … Explore, Build, Move, Create, Read, Learn, Reflect, and Celebrate. There are week-long activities that can be done in your own time at your own pace, such as the Alley Art Word Walk and Magic Tricks with Clinton W. Gray. Other events include a virtual family fun quiz night, pajama story time, scavenger hunts, and a virtual dance party on Zoom with live DJs to celebrate the end of the week.
