Alberta expands its COVID-19 rapid testing program – December 17, 2020
At a news conference at the Calgary Drop-In Centre, Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro announces that the province will expand its COVID-19 rapid testing program to homeless shelters, long-term care facilities and remote rural communities. He is joined by Dr. William Stokes, a microbiologist with Alberta Health Services, and Sandra Clarkson, associate executive director of the Drop-In Centre.
Mobile units will be deployed in the Edmonton zone starting on December 18. Mobile testing centres will then be deployed in the Calgary zone starting the week of December 21. Deployment will initially focus on outbreak sites, with expansion outside the Edmonton and Calgary zones expected to follow shortly. Rapid tests will be sent to 25 rural hospitals in the north, central and south throughout the rest of December and early January.
