Public Safety Minister Bill Blair responds to report on RCMP workplace culture – November 19, 2020
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair speaks with reporters on Parliament Hill about former Supreme Court justice Michel Bastarache’s report on the RCMP. The former justice says that the RCMP’s toxic culture has allowed a systemic pattern of misogynistic, racist, and homophobic attitudes to persist. The federal government must conduct an “external, independent, and in-depth review” of the national police force’s future, according to Bastarache, who has made 52 recommendations aimed at addressing behaviour he concluded is embedded in the RCMP’s culture. Bastarache was appointed to administer a class-action settlement agreement for former female RCMP employees who experienced sexual harassment and discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation. The settlement paid more than $125 million to over 2,300 complainants.
