TORONTO – “Canadians know that there is, and always has been a solemn obligation owed to members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

“This year we, as Canadians have been reminded of the courage and bravery of our military – watching gratefully as the CAF stepped in to provide essential services at long-term care facilities – saving the lives of our loved ones right here at home.

“Canada will mark a unique Remembrance Day tomorrow in the shadow of a second wave of a pandemic. As we fight to protect each person in Canada, many veterans are still falling through the cracks.

“Recent reports indicate that, during the pandemic, injured veterans have not been able to access the physiotherapy or rehabilitation they need, and many with post-traumatic stress disorder are missing out on critical in-person therapy and support. Several thousand veterans are homeless.

“Veterans and their families need an advocate. As Leader of the Green Party, I commit to ensuring our veterans receive the benefits and care they need and deserve.

“For the sake of our veterans and for all Canadians, we must finally do the hard work of completing Canada’s social safety net. A Guaranteed Livable Income, universal pharmacare, and bringing long-term care under the Canada Health Act would have major implications for the health and wellbeing of our veterans.

“The Government and the NDP could act now on this. Stop-gap, piecemeal solutions are no longer sufficient and today’s announcement of an additional $20 million to support veterans’ organizations does not go nearly far enough. They have the votes but have not taken these urgent steps thus far.

“I hope you will join me and my family in donating to The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund.
