Alberta health minister discusses planned cuts to Alberta Health Services – October 13, 2020
Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro holds a news conference in Edmonton to discuss the plan to cut jobs in the provincial health-care system. He is joined by Dr. Verna Yiu, president and CEO of Alberta Health Services (AHS). The province is planning to cut 11,000 jobs at AHS, with the goal of saving $600 million annually once the reductions are implemented over the next three years. The government says there will be no job losses for nurses or other front-line clinical staff. The majority of positions will be lost through outsourcing laundry and community lab services. A minimum of 100 management positions will also be eliminated. The health ministry asked AHS to conduct a review and create an implementation plan in response to the recommendations made in an Ernst & Young report on cost saving and efficiencies.
