In a news conference at Queen’s Park, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announces new limitations on the size of indoor and outdoor gatherings in some parts of the province. The new restrictions come as Toronto, Peel Region, and Ottawa have all seen a growing number of COVID-19 cases in recent days. Outdoor gatherings in those three areas are now reduced to 25 people, while indoor gatherings can’t exceed 10 people. The previous indoor limit was 50 people and 100 for outdoor gatherings. Restaurants, movie theatres, and other businesses would be exempt from the new restrictions, which go into effect on September 18, 2020.

The Ontario government is also introducing legislation to freeze residential rent in 2021 and to extend the temporary ban on evictions for commercial tenants. The premier is joined by provincial cabinet ministers Christine Elliott (health) and Steve Clark (municipal affairs and housing), as well as Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health.
