Green Party Statement on Eid al-Fitr

OTTAWA – The sighting of this evening’s new moon will herald an end to the holy month of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr, celebrated by Muslims in Canada and around the world, commemorates the breaking of the fast and ushers in the month of Shawwal.

“This year’s Eid al-Fitr will be a very different celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Green Party Interim Leader Jo-Ann Roberts. “Physical distancing means that the traditional gatherings for prayers, special meals and celebrations may not be possible for many families. Despite the challenges, we hope that members of Canada’s Muslim communities will be able to find innovative ways to connect with their loved ones both at home and abroad to celebrate this important festival.”

“On behalf of the Green Party of Canada we wish Muslims everywhere Eid Mubarak!”
