Kamloops, BC – The City of Kamloops and our Sister City of Uji, Japan, have decided to postpone the annual Uji high school student visit to Kamloops that was scheduled to take place in August.

The City of Kamloops and Uji City have shared a Sister City relationship since the official twinning on July 1, 1990. As part of that relationship, the Kamloops hosts a group of junior high school students from Uji each year. The annual visit has only been cancelled twice—once in 2009 due to H1N1 concerns and in 2017 due to the wildfires.

“During this time, and with safety being our top priority, we believe it is best to postpone the Uji student visit to Kamloops to summer 2021,” said Mayor Ken Christian. “We look forward to planning this special visit for 2021, and we will miss having the students visit our city this year.”

Several students who have visited Kamloops as part of this visit have returned to Kamloops to attend Thompson Rivers University as part of their post-secondary education.

The City announced in March that the 30th anniversary celebration of cultural awareness, economic development, and tourism between the two municipalities would be postponed and celebrated in 2021.
