Lockdown and search at Mission Institution

February 25, 2020 – Abbotsford, British Columbia – Correctional Service Canada

On February 23, 2020, at about 2:30 p.m., a lockdown was put in place at Mission Institution, a medium security federal institution, to allow staff to conduct a search of the institution following an inmate assault.

The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Visits have been suspended until the search is completed. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

The safety and security of the institutions is the Correctional Service of Canada’s (CSC) primary concern. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to preventing the entry of contraband into its institutions. Our efforts help to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone. CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.

An inmate was injured during the lockdown, was taken to hospital, and returned the same day. No employees were injured.

In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will continue to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and take the appropriate measures.
