Jagmeet Singh, Leaders of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:
“Today, New Democrats join Canadians everywhere in celebrating Canada’s 152th birthday.
We’ve accomplished so much together as a country, and today is an opportunity to remind ourselves that far more unites us than divides us.
While Canadians have many reasons to be proud today, our work to create a more equal, just, and inclusive country is not done. In the spirit of reconciliation, that means recognizing that this day is a difficult anniversary for Indigenous peoples in Canada who continue to struggle for justice and recognition.
On this Canada Day, let’s commit to building a Canada that works for everyone, not just the few at the top. It’s also a time for us to commit to protecting our environment, defending the most marginalized, and reducing inequality in communities from coast to coast to coast.
Canadians can count on New Democrats to stand up for a better, more equal Canada where no one is left behind. Let’s continue to work together to build a better country and a better future for all our children and grandchildren.
On behalf of all New Democrats, I wish you and your family a fun and safe Canada Day.”
