issues statement to mark Yom HaShoah

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issued the following statement on Yom HaShoah:
“Today, on Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day – Jewish communities in Canada, Israel, and around the world commemorate the lives lost during the Holocaust and the courage, bravery, and heroism of Holocaust survivors.
“Over six million Jewish lives were taken away by the Nazi regime during World War II resulting in unspeakable heights of tragedy, trauma, and torment for the Jewish people. Throughout this period, Jews who were being victimized for their identity resisted their oppressors by maintaining their dignity through the most unbearable circumstances. Today, we remember their valiant spirit.
“Synagogue services and communal vigils will be taking place across Canada and around the world today. In Israel, the entire country will come to a standstill for two minutes of silent reflection. Thousands of students will also gather for the March of the Living, an annual silent march at Auschwitz in contrast to and defiance of Holocaust death marches.
“Today and everyday, we stand with Israel and the Jewish people to ensure that all acts of anti-Semitism, hatred, and prejudice never find a place in our communities. We also recommit ourselves on this solemn occasion to continue to defend Israel’s right to exist as a homeland for the Jewish people.
“The stories of Holocaust survivors must continue to be told and heard as a testament to the fortitude of the Jewish people and as a reminder of the evil that humanity is capable of when fundamental freedoms are not respected.
